Lesson 6 of 12

Time, light and turning back

40 min

It is 15:20 on a November afternoon. The summit cairn is in sight, perhaps twenty minutes away. You have walked for four hours to get here, you drove three hours yesterday, and your friend is already striding ahead. Cloud is building in the west. Sunset is a little after 16:00. Nobody in the group says "we should turn round", because nobody wants to be the one who says it.

In this lesson

  • Daylight budget: estimating time to sunset
  • Why the number varies
  • Turnaround times
  • Turning back with the summit in sight
  • The sunk cost trap
  • Normalcy bias and the slow-onset emergency
  • Human-factor traps: the FACETS checklist
  • The pattern
  • Check yourself
  • Key points
