Lesson 9 of 15

River crossings: whether, where and how

45 min

It is four o'clock on a November afternoon and getting dark. Between you and the road is a beck you stepped across on stones this morning. It has rained since lunch. Now it is brown, loud and fast, the stones have gone, and you can hear something knocking on the bed under the water. The road is 300 m away on the far side. The footbridge is 3 km upstream.
