Lesson 5 of 14

Fruit and nuts: the autumn larder

40 min

September on a hedge-lined lane. Blackberries glisten among the thorns, haws hang dark red on the hawthorn, rosehips shine on the wild rose, and under the hazel at the corner a scatter of nibbled shells shows that the squirrels got there first. Autumn is the one season in Britain when the wild gives real calories in quantity: sugar in the fruit, fat in the nuts, starch in chestnuts and acorns.
