Lesson 4 of 12

Tarps and hammocks: pitches for every weather

45 min

A tarp is a sheet of waterproof fabric with tie-out points round the edge. It weighs little, packs small, and can be pitched in a dozen shapes. Pitched well, it gives you a dry, wind-shedding roof in minutes. Pitched badly, it flaps all night, collects a pool of water over your head, funnels rain on to your sleeping bag and pulls its pegs out at two in the morning.
